A few years after I came to L’Arche in Toronto, I had the urge to visit a L’Arche community in Scotland, since my family is from there. I randomly chose the Inverness community. I was greeted by core member Ian Cameron. We laughed off the coincidence that he had the same name as my grandfather. After tea we were looking at some old photo albums of the community members and at one point I was quite shocked at what I saw. There was a photo I had already seen in my own family’s collection of pictures. The photo was of Lilias, one of the L’Arche Inverness core members, taken in the late 1950s on the shore of a Loch in the highlands of Scotland where she used to spend summers with her family. What was amazing was that my mother was also in the photo! She too had spent family holidays there and knew Lilias when they were both younger. The next time I was in Scotland with my mother, we went to Inverness and I took her to visit the L’Arche home where Lilias lived. It was a wonderful reunion for the two women after almost 45 years.
