The Power of a Greeting

George enjoyed his independence and often walked around the town where he lived. At George’s funeral, the church was packed. George tended to look a little unkempt and he often came across as gruff. We who knew him recognized his goodness, but we wondered how so many other townspeople, who could not have known him so well, were drawn to say farewell to him. A neighbour summed up the reason: "He always said ’hi’ whenever he was passing."
